Apples vs. Apple Flavoring in Cocktails

Lush Apple Toddy Slushies literally taste like you're drinking a crisp, delicious apple. No joke. And our Spiced Wine? Its rich flavor comes from a mix of real, organic apples, citrus, and spices. But how do we get the apples in there?

We use organic, freeze-dried apple powder. We NEVER use "apple flavoring."

Here’s why:

Organic apple powder, made from dried and finely ground apples, is a nutrient-rich ingredient with several health benefits. It is:

  • Rich in Fiber: Apple powder contains both soluble and insoluble fiber, promoting digestive health, supporting regular bowel movements, and helping to control blood sugar by slowing glucose absorption.
  • Antioxidant Properties: Apples are high in antioxidants like quercetin, catechin, and chlorogenic acid, which help reduce oxidative stress, protect cells from damage, and may lower the risk of chronic diseases.
  • Supports Heart Health: The fiber, potassium, and antioxidants in apple powder contribute to heart health by potentially lowering blood pressure, reducing cholesterol, and supporting overall cardiovascular function.
  • Immune-Boosting Vitamin C: Apple powder is a source of vitamin C, which is important for immune function, skin health, and collagen production.
  • Aids in Weight Management: Due to its fiber content, apple powder can help with satiety, making people feel fuller longer. This may support weight management by reducing overeating and cravings.
  • Gut Health: The pectin fiber in apples acts as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial gut bacteria and supporting a balanced microbiome.
  • Blood Sugar Regulation: The fiber and natural sugars in apple powder are released more slowly in the body, which can help stabilize blood sugar levels and prevent spikes.

On the other hand, “Apple flavoring” can be either natural or artificial, and it's tough for a consumer to know exactly what they are consuming.

In fact, Artificial Apple Flavoring does not contain any real apple and is instead synthesized in a lab to replicate the taste. It typically contains compounds like isoamyl acetate and ethyl hexanoate, which mimic the sweet and fruity notes of apples. These artificial compounds are cheaper to produce and often used in processed foods.

Yuck!

If you're like us, you want a wine slushie that tastes like a bite out of an apple, not ethyl hexanoate. Choose wisely. Choose organic. Choose Lush!
